Restaurants Canada continues to be at the table, working with all levels of government to ensure the concerns of the foodservice community are being addressed, while working with our partners to provide you with resources relevant to your operations, as the response to COVID-19 continues to evolve. 

Federal Announcement: Initial CECRA Program Details Now Available

The federal government has reached an agreement in principle with all provinces and territories to implement the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA) program for small businesses.
 
Details announced so far:
  • The program will lower rent by 75% for small businesses that have been affected by COVID-19. Qualifying commercial property owners will receive forgivable loans to cover 50% of 3 monthly rent payments that are payable by eligible small business tenants who are experiencing financial hardship during April, May, and June. The loans will be forgiven if the mortgaged property owner agrees to reduce the eligible small business tenants’ rent by at least 75% for the 3 corresponding months under a rent forgiveness agreement. The tenant would cover the remainder, up to 25% of the rent.
  • The program will protect commercial tenants from being evicted, for the duration that the agreement is in place.
  • Eligible small business tenants are businesses paying less than $50,000 per month in rent who have temporarily ceased operations or have experienced at least a 70% drop in pre-COVID-19 revenues.
Much of what is being offered responds to recommendations that Restaurants Canada shared in our news release yesterday.
 
While we're still waiting to learn the full details of the program, we are encouraged by what the federal and provincial governments have brought to the table and look forward to building on any areas where there might still be gaps.
