Hi ,

Restaurants Canada continues to be at the table, working with all levels of government to ensure the concerns of the foodservice community are being addressed, while working with our partners to provide you with resources relevant to your operations, as the response to COVID-19 continues to evolve.

Federal relief measure updates

The voice of foodservice is being heard!
Ongoing engagement from Restaurants Canada has led to the following changes to federal relief measures announced today:
  • Bars and lounges will now have access to the $40 billion in new credit being made available via the government’s business bank. The Small and Medium-sized Enterprise Loan and Guarantee program offered through the Business Development Bank of Canada and Export Development Canada is now open to all businesses impacted by COVID-19. Businesses that get most of their revenue from alcohol sales will no longer be excluded from the program if they require cash flow to survive and recover from the pandemic.
  • Anyone working up to 10 hours per week will be eligible for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit. During his press conference today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau acknowledged that some people are “falling between the cracks” and announced that anyone "working reduced hours, down to 10 hours a week or less" will soon be able to benefit from this program. The federal government is expected to release more details on this later this week.

We don't yet have any indication regarding when the House of Commons will be recalled to pass legislation needed for the implementation of relief measures announced at the end of March, but we expect an announcement on this over the next few days.

Navigating COVID-19: CERB and Wage Subsidy

We were joined by lawyer Mike MacLellan of CCPartners as he discussed what the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) is, who is eligible for this benefit, and how to apply.

The webinar also reviewed the differences between CERB and EI and the who should apply for what program. Mike also walked through the Canadian Emergency Wage Subsidy Program and spoke to what the necessary qualifications are as well as helped answer some of the most frequently asked questions.
