Hi there,

Restaurants Canada continues to be at the table, working with all levels of government to ensure the concerns of the foodservice community are being addressed, while working with our partners to provide you with resources relevant to your operations, as the response to COVID-19 continues to evolve.

Raising the Voice of Foodservice:
Federal Recommendations

On Aug. 7, Restaurants Canada tabled a pre-budget submission to the federal finance committee, advocating for continued support to help the foodservice industry through the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

Last week we released a statement bringing attention to key recommendations from our federal budget submission, which were reinforced by the latest job numbers from Statistics Canada revealing that Canada’s restaurants are still less than halfway to recovering their pandemic job losses: While the latest Labour Force Survey results indicate that foodservice employment increased by 306,000 jobs between March and July, the sector remains 308,900 jobs short of where it was in February 2020.

No other industry comes close to continuing to face this level of shortfall.

Today we submitted recommendations to the federal Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology, building on our recommendations to the finance committee to extend and strengthen support for foodservice businesses so they can continue contributing to Canada’s recovery.

Wage Subsidy Update:
Applications Now Open for Period 5

Applications for Period 5 of the enhanced Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) are now open.

Newly eligible employers may sign up via My Business Account or Represent a Client (for tax preparers) and enroll their payroll account for direct deposit to get their payments faster.

Calculating the CEWS under the new rules

Effective as of Period 5 (July 5, 2020 to August 1, 2020), the CEWS will include:

  • A base subsidy for all eligible employers that are experiencing a drop in revenues, with the subsidy amount varying depending on the scale of revenue drop; and
  • A top-up subsidy of up to an additional 25%, providing a total subsidy of up to 85%, for those employers that have been most adversely affected by the COVID-19 crisis.

The CRA website can help you understand how the revenue drop and subsidy rate are calculated.

Online CEWS calculator

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has launched an updated and improved online calculator to help small and large employers alike prepare to apply for the new phase of the program.

The CEWS calculator can be found on the CRA’s updated Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy web page, which includes detailed information to help employers understand how the CEWS can support their employees and operations, who is eligible to apply, and how claim periods are structured.
