According to Technomic’s MenuMonitor database, the top Mexican entrées on Canadian menus is tacos and taquitos.. On the one hand, authenticity is key as interest in street food grows, but some eye-catching, nontraditional taco preparations are reaching menus too. An example of this last trend is The Pickle Barrel’s limited-time PB Reuben taco with pulled pastrami, Thousand Island slaw, Swiss cheese, deli mustard, onion and pickle.

Burritos are the second-most popular Mexican entrée on menus. MenuMonitor data shows 46% of the burrito entrée listings are found in the fast-casual segment. Mexican handhelds excel in this segment because customization is often involved. Chains like Burrito Boyz, Mucho Burrito and Quesada Burritos & Tacos all specialize in build-your-own burritos.

Third on the list are quesadillas,usually in varieties like cheese, chicken, steak or vegetable. On Tex-Mex menus, quesadillas often infuse signature Mexican ingredients with Southern barbecue-inspired flavours. For example, Lone Star Texas Grill serves its Classic Style Pork Carnita Quesadilla with smoked pulled pork, barbecue sauce, Jack and cheddar cheeses, housemade pico de gallo and sour cream.
