WHAT'S TRENDING: Top Cheeses on Burgers

TRENDING: Top Cheeses on Burgers

It’s not a surprise that Canadian menus feature cheddar as the top choice for cheeses on burgers, by a large margin. Most cheddar-topped burgers use a mild variety, allowing the flavour to pair easily with other ingredients. Beyond classic cheeseburgers, cheddar is also used to balance out bold flavours on specialty burgers, such as The Works Gourmet Burger Bistro’s Kamikaze Burger. It's  topped with jalapeño, chipotle and banana peppers, cheddar cheese and Hotter Than Hell specialty sauce.

Monterey Jack is also one of the leading burger cheeses, behind Swiss and mozzarella. With origins in California, this cheese is sometimes prepared with spices, herbs and peppers. Operators often spotlight Monterey Jack cheese on Southwest-inspired burgers to complement flavours like jalapeño, chipotle and avocado.

Brie comes in at #5 on the list. This soft, creamy cheese often has a mild sweet and nutty flavour, which is frequently paired with ingredients like mushrooms and caramelized onions. For example, Casey's Grill • Bar’s Mushroom and Brie Burger is topped with sautéed mushrooms, Brie, tomato and arugula.
